The Treatment
The Magazine: WAM (We are music)
Target Readership: My magazine is very much concentrated on the genres of indie and rock. Target ages for my magazine are people in their late teens/early 20’s (16-22). Particularly at this age and in this genre people are willing to listen and learn about new music and “WAM” will provide them with this knowledge. Because my magazine is aimed towards people of the younger generation the price attached will be cheaper than other magazines in this category. This is because many people of this age either are paid: pocket money, minimum wage or are struggling to pay off student debts. Therefore “WAM” will be priced at £1-50.
Form and Style: “Wam” is an A4 magazine fully coloured featuring a variety of interviews, new singles/albums, full gig reports and news on the biggest stars: past, present and future. At "WAM" we believe that you deserve to hear the rising talent in rock and indie with all of which they have to offer. Because the magazine is aimed towards the younger generation language will be mainly informal with modern terms and the use of slang vocabularly.
Themes and Typical features: "WAM" will feature many: interviews, gig reviews, news, opinion polls and photo's. Much of what we do is topical to an everchanging music industry with a wide range of opinions covering all the topics we include. In every issue there will be an exclusive interview with one of the biggest stars at this present time, other interviws may also be included regarding new singles or album releases. We will often include a weekly link to our website whereby people can vote for our chosen poll of the week, all polls will be included in that weeks edition of "WAM". Every week we will run down the top 2o singles of the week, we also do the same for albums monthly. All the news from the world of indie and rock will be covered in depth detail as we know fans want to be kept up to date with all new news.
Potential advertisers: Because our magazine is targeted towards a more youthful audience much of the advertising seen inside will reflect this. For example there will be adverts concerning: games, fashion, Tv shows and of course music. Featured advertising guests include: EA Games, Ubisoft, Infinity Ward, Top Man, Burtons, Top Shop, Skins, Shameless and all the up an coming gig listings that will interest you. All these are particularly linked to the youthful culture which is why we add them to our magazine.
Editorial Team: The first thing to know about the editorial team is that they all live for music and show great passion for it, most of whom have been involved on the music scene since a young age. Magazine name
I forgot to mention and post the name of my magazine. I will be calling my magazine "WAM", this stands for we are music. This name suggests that the magazine is fully equiped to talk about all things music related also because its an onomatopoeia it will be more catchy and a name to remember for the reader.

Textual analysis of front cover (2 of 2)
Cover image- On the front cover of this edition of "NME" magazine there is an image of the band "Them Crooked Vultures". It is a medium long shot and 2 of the 3 band members are looking at the camera. This gives a more personal feel for the reader like they are being invited by the band into their lives. The reader will be interested by this as they would be finding out about the life style of a successful band and seeing how their career effects them everyday. Because the image takes up about 90% of the front cover the buyer is entitled to believe that the band is big in the music industry and worth reading about. I like the image because its a simple shot but explains alot about the band.
Price label- This label is tilted vertical in the bottom right hand corner of the cover. The effect of this is that the reader is somewhat obscured as to seeing it clearly. I feel this shows that the magazine maybe more expensive than other top mags in this genre and so the makers (Bauer media group) want to hide visible sight to the buyer. With a prive of £2:30 it is expensive for a weekly magazine but as we know "It's whats inside that counts".
Cover lines- These are marked by the use of "PLUS+" which gives the impression that there is much more interesting news and interviews in the magazine. I also think that the use of the word and the symbol is effective as it signifies a twice the importance feel. The bands/artist mentioned in the cover lines are: Radiohead, Jarvis Cocker and Hot Chip. Although these bands may not be as big as the main band of the week they are still important to the magazine an this is clear in the fact that they have been used on the front cover.
Colours- When you look at the front cover of this magazine you instantly notice that the only fonts used by "Nme" are: red, black and white. These colours work well together as they are all bold and emphasise each other. You could say this resembles the magazine itself as it is willing to take extra steps to make its magazine bigger and better.
Graphics- There are two main uses of graphic on this front cover, the first one is a sticker effect. This works well because not only does it suggest a more relaxed informal feel but it also gives the reader the impression that there is extra vital information about the music which the reader should be informed about. The second device is the addition of a ribbon where it says "World exclusive first interview" I like this because traditionally the opening of something or the starting of a particular thing is marked by the cutting of a ribbon, so the use of a ribbon shows that "Them Crooked Vultures" could be the next best thing in music.
Headline/banner- The headline is "Them Crooked Vultues", this is an interesting headline because its just simply the name of the band and this wouldn't usually be the case. Seeing as the headline is direct you wouldn't be far wrong thinking that the band is any different. The headline is also supported by a quote from one of the band members, "It's like led zeppelin. There are no rules" Because its on the front cover it is designed to make the consumer read the interview with the band so the quote is mearly used to give an insight into what you can expect.
Strapline- "MUSE UK TOUR PHOTO SPECIAL" is the strap line for this edition. Because it is in full capitals you get the sense that these photos are worth looking at also i believe its a higher case to show that although its a strapline its still just as important as the main headline.
Mathead- Clearly the masthead is "NME" which stands for "New Musical Express". This name is always fonted with a black and white outline filled in with red lettering, the effect of keeping this same style makes it a more accessible and symbolised product. The success of this is such that if you mention Nme to anyone you would get a high percentage back of people who understand or have heard of the magazine.

Textual analysis of front cover (1 of 2)
Cover image- On the front cover of this addition of "KERRANG!" magazine there are big, clear images of popular rock bands like: Blink 182, Avenged Sevenfold, My Chemical Romance and Bullet For My Valentine. Images like these would appeal to the buyer as the bands mentioned are successful in their particualr genre which therefore means more fans support them and more people look out for them.
Price label- This magazine clearly shows its price alongside the cover lines as to suggest that its not affraid of how much it costs and in some way portrays how the magazine thinks its a reasonable price. Being a weekly magazine "Kerrang!" may in the long run cost more money overall to buy than a single issue monthly magazine like "Q", but the question of value is always goin to be asked and obviously the readers of "Kerrang!" feel as if they are getting more value for their spending. Despite the fact that their magazine may cost more to purchase in total, them buying the magazine frequently suggests its popularity.
Cover lines- The variety of stories on the front cover suggests how much there is to talk about on the rock scene and with concern to the bands mentioned this suggests their popularity as they appear on the front cover of a national magazine. A different font is used every other word to single out each band.
Colours- On first sight of the magazine you are clearly struck by the use of red and gold. Individually these colours suggest: wealth, fame, money, fire and passion. I feel that these colours are effective because they stand out to the reader but added with their meanings they suggest the great popularity of all the bands mentioned.
Graphics- The main graphic used by the makers (Bauer media group) of Kerrang magazine is the use of stickers. Using this device suggests that the magazine is over-loaded with information therefore they have had to adorn stickers to supply the reader with all the info possible. The adding of stickers also expresses the magazines value for more money as you are getting more information than is possible to fit inside. So the reader go's away buying this publication believing that they have got a bargain and with the mass of info inside they are almost certainly right.
Headline/banner- The headline on this edition is "50 ALBUMS YOU MUST HERE IN 2010" This would entice the reader because not only does it reccomend buying the albums but it also draws in the reader as to whether any of their favourote bands are mentioned. I believe that this kind of one-off special would be successful as it would consist of more featured bands and artists. This clearly appeals to the consumer as everyone wants to see and read about the biggest and best bands in the world.
Strap line- "KERRANG! RELENTLESS ENERGY TOUR: WIN! TICKETS TO EVERY SHOW!" Because its only the strap line its not designed to absorb the audience straight away but it is position intelligently at the top of the page because it still manages to finally grap attention. Although the text is small the font used is black writing with a yellow text box; this combination of colours is effective because the colours compliment each other nicely which means that, to a certain degree, they stand out. Obviously the magazine wants you to read this strapline because it is advertising the chance to win in their competition.
Masthead- The Masthead is "KERRANG". This word is an onomatopoeia, the effect of this for the audience is that the word sounds exactly as you say it. This leads to the name of the magazine being catch, therefore easy to remember. The font of the masthead is also interesting as the letters appear to be brakeing, this suggests that the music in this magazine is rock/metal because it's designed to be played loud and one of the effects of extremely loud music is the cracking of surfaces.

I have successfully completely my student magazine and i am now starting on my main task which is to create a music magazine.
